Subject: [Thuban-list] Thuban 0.1.2 released

Hi all,

Thuban 0.1.2 is available for download:

Change Summary:

 - Thuban is quite a bit faster now. This is mainly due to using
   shapelib's quad tree in various places, but there were also some
   other speedups.

 - The current mouse position in projected coordinates is now displayed
   in the status bar.

 - A menu item to open the tree view so that it can be reopened if
   you've closed its window

 - "View full extent" is now also a button in the toolbar

 - Various bug-fixes. Among other things thuban works properly with
   Python >= 2.0 and on PPC systems now.

I have a general question for all.Even though it's not related directly with ArcView or ArcInfo, I was told to build a big GIS project. I need to know what are the main tasks of GIS analyst, their functions and you know any literature, to send me the address where i can figure out how to deal with the situation.

I would ask you as well what are the differences with a computer analyst.

I will appreciate any help very much!

this is off-topic indeed.

Your questions are not realted to certain software nor products nor
Free Software. You should put your question onto some other
general GIS list. I don't know a really apropriate list, but perhaps you
can discuss this on the newsgroup comp.infosystems.gis.

At least you won't be a victim of one single framework (I mean com) approaching GIS.

www.python.org 
Excellent OOlanguage, good connections in the real world, serveral distributions, good learning curve, easy to use.
Lot of libraries extending the environment. Some python-GisRelated projects running (www.thuban.org, openev.sourceforge.org).

Yes, I know about Python. I started to learn how it works. I think it's another posibility. Do you use python? I would like to hear also from phyton users and gis developers. I don't discard to bet for Python.

Another question about python. Is it possible to develop Python program for intranet internet?

Hi,

extending Thuban by Add-ons as an alternative
to directly add features to Thuban is desirable.
It will allow to create your own (special) application
with all the features of Thuban without the need
of forking the development and maintaining your own
branch of Thuban.

One example where an add-on is planned is
GREAT-ER (greater.intevation.org).
It is an environmental simulation tool for chemical
exposure in river networks.

We have identified four items required for an add-on:
It must be possible

-  to add additional menus to the menu bar
-  to add additional menu items to existing menus
-  to add tools
-  to store additional information in the xml-based session

Are you missing further customization features?
