Unfortunatly it is not possible to rewrite the whole existing facturing-software only to integrate the mapping component :). If so, you can have a look at MonoGIS (http://www.monogis.org/), which is a library built on topo of Mono platform which uses several third-party components as well; or maybe SharpMap (http://www.codeplex.com/Wiki/View.aspx?ProjectName=SharpMap). You can also use Java libraries, as GeoTools (http://geotools.codehaus.org/) for instante, and use sg. like IKVM (http://www.ikvm.net/). I have a wealth of information, most of it geospatial, but some of it "loosely geospatial" (they are time trends associated with location; e.g., evolution of land use over many years over region x). I got talked into providing this in the web, in a way similar to USDA's new satellite imagery page for crop monitoring . Can anyone suggest where to start looking for this? Apart from starting from scratch, and leveraging Mapserver for the mapping and spatial query bit, is there something that "more or less" works? I doubt it, as this is probably a very particular problem that no generic tool can hope to cover itself. The symposium provides a forum for original research contributions covering all conceptual, design, and implementation aspects of GIS and ranging from applications, user interface considerations, and visualization down to storage management and indexing issues. Papers cannot exceed 8 pages in length. In addition to the regular full-length papers, the Program Committee may accept some as poster papers which may be requested to be shortened. All submitted papers will be refereed for quality, originality, and relevance by the Program Committee. The acceptance/rejection of the papers will be based on the review results. All questions should be addressed to the Program Committee Chair. One author per paper is required to register and attend the conference to present the paper if accepted for publication. I tried a couple, and found them pretty difficult. Are there any free gis programs that are relatively easy to use? If for example, I just wanted to make a simple map? In my case, I work with global data, like infant mortality rate (IMR), so I would want to make a map of the world, showing countries with high IMR and countries with low IRM. I'd be interested in fairly easy to learn and use programs. I also want to list programs on my website that are fairly easy to learn, that can be used by people without a ton of training in gis, but who are willing to invest some time. I'd suggest QGIS as a good way to start. I find it's easy as any to use, and plots most common formats natively. Reprojection isn't that intuitive in QGIS, and it has limited editing capbility, but I suggest it is the easiest to use & most compatible overall. Others worth a look are OpenJUMP & uDIG (java apps) or perhaps Saga GIS, for something a bit more desktop GIS as opposed to desktop mapping. FWTools may also be suitable for your needs. Tyler Mitchell's book on Open Source Web Mapping covers FWTools & mapserver very well to get you started with these. You might also look at mapserver & masybe OpenLayerts for getting your maps dynamically into a Web page. > I'd be interested in fairly easy to learn and use programs. The number and size of these datasets continues to increase rapidly, making their manual processing impossible. It is therefore, imperative that efficient and effective techniques are developed to extract useful information from these datasets. Traditional data mining techniques are ineffective in the spatial domain since they don??t incorporate the special features of the spatial domain, e.g. spatial autocorrelation. The goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers, developers and practitioners in the field of spatial and spatio-temporal data mining together in order to identify current research foci, vital areas of need, and critical points of synergy. Selected papers will appear in the GeoInformatica journal as a special issue. TOPICS OF INTEREST Topics of interest include but are not limited to: o Theoretical foundations of spatial and spatio-temporal data mining o Novel techniques for spatial and spatio-temporal data mining o Role of uncertainty in spatial and spatio-temporal data mining o Visualization techniques for spatial and spatio-temporal data mining results o Languages and primitives for data mining o Web mining techniques for spatial and spatio-temporal data o Spatial and spatio-temporal data mining at multiple resolutions o Scalable techniques for spatial data mining o Applications and case studies in spatial and spatio-temporal data mining o Data mining techniques for dynamic spatial and spatio-temporal data o Role of spatial analysis in spatial and spatio-temporal data mining o Data structures and indexing methods for spatio-temporal data mining o Data mining from unstructured spatial and spatio-temporal data PAPER SUBMISSION This is an open call-for-papers. If you plan on giving a 25 minute presentation at FOSS4G, make sure you get your abstract in before the deadline! http://www.foss4g2007.org/presentations/ FOSS4G 2007 presentations are 25 minute talks, with 5 minute question and answer sessions at the end. Presentations cover the use or development of open source geospatial software. Anyone can can submit a presentation proposal and take part in the conference as a presenter. Some topics of interest for this year are: * Case Studies: Relate the experiences of you and your organization using open source geospatial. Where do things work well? Poorly? What problems did you solve, and at what cost? What do you recommend for others? Why? * Benchmarks: Comparisons between pieces of geospatial software. How do features compare? Speed? Ease of use? What do you recommend for others? * Visualization: Tell about your tips and tricks for effective visualization. How do you present information in a compelling way? 3D? Cartographic tricks? Labelling and naming ideas? Graphs and hybrid map/data combinations? * Development: What are the new developments in your open source geospatial software product? How does it work, how do people use it, what are the technical issues you are running into? * Hacks and Mashing: Have you put together something novel or cool this year? What did you stick together, how did it work, show us your gizmo! * Collaboration: What techniques are you using to improve collaboration between organizations and between individuals. Public geodata, collaborative data collection, data sharing, open standards, de facto standards, and more! If you have an open source geospatial story to tell, we want to hear it! This software framework enables the user to combine a real-world image with sensor data to create a local short term weather forecast. Please find more information at: http://52north.org/index.php?option=com_projects&task=showProject&id=28&Itemid=127 52?North's new routing service enables users to calculate a suitable truck route along forest roads. The user submits vehicle properties, such as width and weight and the service calculates the route along an existing road network which entails GeoDat conform information, such as width of road, maximum load capacity, grade, etc. The framework can also be adapted to calculate routes for other use cases, such as wheelchair accessible routing within a city. I plan on using & demonstrating FOSS GIS related tools, in paticular, PostGIS, mapserver, QGIS & GMT, perhaps GRASS as well if it seems relevant. (I've just installed everything on a Laptop running OpenSuse 10.2, with Compiz running nicely, which seems to impress people nicely for presentations/demos :-) Does anyone know of local FOSS users, especially GIS ones, I could contact while I'm there? Thanks, Brent Wood
