From ari.jolma at tkk.fi Mon Jul 2 10:41:09 2007 From: ari.jolma at tkk.fi (Ari Jolma) Date: Mon, 02 Jul 2007 11:41:09 +0300 Subject: [Freegis-list] Geoinformatica version 0.8 Message-ID: <4688BA25.5000608@tkk.fi> Hello, After a lot of work I've prepared a 0.8 release of the Geoinformatica stack of free geospatial software. Geoinformatica is a stack, which is based on GDAL and OGR (through which Proj4, PostGIS, GEOS are available), depends on GTK+ and Cairo to provide visualization and GUI, and uses Perl to glue everything together. Geoinformatica uses also libral for raster algebra. The core parts of the release are available at http://map.hut.fi/files/Geoinformatica/v0.8/ , the Perl modules are also at CPAN. Besides these at least a new GDAL is more or less required. There's a convenient almost-all-in-one (GTK+ has to downloaded separately but Perl is included) Windows port available at http://map.hut.fi/files/Geoinformatica/win32/ The homepage of Geoinformatica is at http://geoinformatics.tkk.fi/twiki/bin/view/Main/GeoinformaticaSoftware The goal of Geoinformatica is provide a high-level, high-quality and fast programming, CLI and GUI application development environment for geospatial domain. Geoinformatica also contains a simple desktop geospatial data viewer-browser-visualizer-CLI (implemented in ~100 lines of Perl code). I'd be very happy to hear comments, complaints, and suggestions from people who try it out. The Windows port should be very simple to set up and try (install GTK+ from http://gladewin32.sourceforge.net, download latest Geoinformatica.zip, unzip to C:\ and run gui.bat). This release is an intermediate point in a road to 1.0 and contains many issues: - the PostGIS-connection seems to be broken in the Windows port - the APIs, although stabilization has now a high priority, may still change somewhat - the Perl in the Windows-port is in-house compiled MinGW version and MinGW+MSYS is used for other parts as well (including GDAL and its Perl bindings) - visualization is not yet completely Cairo-based, thus for example PDF output is not yet available - the extension mechanisms are not yet very well developed in all cases (extending Geoinformatica with other FOSS libraries and domain-specific toolsets has a high priority) - numerous small details are not as they should be Enjoy, Ari -- Prof. Ari Jolma Geoinformaatio- ja paikannustekniikka / Geoinformation and positioning Teknillinen Korkeakoulu / Helsinki University of Technology tel: +358 9 451 3886 address: POBox 1200, 02015 TKK, Finland Email: ari.jolma at tkk.fi URL: http://www.tkk.fi/~jolma From pcreso at pcreso.com Tue Jul 3 21:54:55 2007 From: pcreso at pcreso.com (Brent Wood) Date: Tue, 3 Jul 2007 12:54:55 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Freegis-list] OpenMoko update (open platform cell phone/GPS) In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <499879.67719.qm@web33211.mail.mud.yahoo.com> I figure there may be some interest here in this... The number and size of these datasets continues to increase rapidly, making their manual processing impossible. It is therefore, imperative that efficient and effective techniques are developed to extract useful information from these datasets. Traditional data mining techniques are ineffective in the spatial domain since they don??t incorporate the special features of the spatial domain, e.g. spatial autocorrelation. The goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers, developers and practitioners in the field of spatial and spatio-temporal data mining together in order to identify current research foci, vital areas of need, and critical points of synergy. Selected papers will appear in the GeoInformatica journal as a special issue. TOPICS OF INTEREST Topics of interest include but are not limited to: o Theoretical foundations of spatial and spatio-temporal data mining o Novel techniques for spatial and spatio-temporal data mining o Role of uncertainty in spatial and spatio-temporal data mining o Visualization techniques for spatial and spatio-temporal data mining results o Languages and primitives for data mining o Web mining techniques for spatial and spatio-temporal data o Spatial and spatio-temporal data mining at multiple resolutions o Scalable techniques for spatial data mining o Applications and case studies in spatial and spatio-temporal data mining o Data mining techniques for dynamic spatial and spatio-temporal data o Role of spatial analysis in spatial and spatio-temporal data mining o Data structures and indexing methods for spatio-temporal data mining o Data mining from unstructured spatial and spatio-temporal data PAPER SUBMISSION This is an open call-for-papers. Only original, high-quality papers, in-line with the ICDM??07 standard guidelines, will be considered for this workshop. The manuscript should not exceed 6 single-spaced, double-column pages, including figures and tables. The font size should be at least 10 point. The submission paper should be in PDF file format. It is now running on a LAN with a mapserver WMS, and we'd like to use this as the map background provider, instead of the local image. This background is generated from multibeam bathymetry data collected in an immediately prior run over the survey site. Can anyone offer some advice as to the best way to embed such a WMS client in VB? Ideally I guess a dll with zoom/pan & local point overlay capabilities. Most notably is that all functions that query spatial data only operate on MBRs (minimum bounding rectangles, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_bounding_rectangle), to simplify the operations. Thanks to my colleague Alexey "Holyfoot" Botchkov from Izhevsk, Russia, some of the spatial relation functions like INTERSECTS and WITHIN now work in the way they are described by OpenGIS and are no longer limited to using MBRs. He has been working on improving the GIS functionality as a side project and the work has now reached a level at which he is ready to give it some public testing and solicit feedback about it. Currently these new features have not been slated for inclusion in any upcoming MySQL major release. But the more feedback and testing this code receives, the faster it will reach a maturity level that makes it a potential feature candidate for new versions of MySQL. In addition to improving already existing functionality, Holyfoot also implemented some new precise geospatial functions - the following functions are available now and use precise operations instead of MBRs: * BUFFER(g1 geometry, d numeric) returns a Geometry defined by buffering a distance d around g1 where d is the distance units for the Spatial Reference of g1 * DIFFERENCE(g1 geometry, g2 geometry) returns a Geometry that is the closure of the set difference of g1 and g2 * DISTANCE(g1 geometry, g2 geometry) returns distance between g1 and g2 * INTERSECTION(g1 geometry, g2 geometry) returns a Geometry that is the set intersection of g1 and g2 * SYM_DIFFERENCE(g1 geometry, g2 geometry) returns a Geometry that is the closure of the set symmetric difference of g1 and g2 (logical XOR of space) * UNION(g1 geometry, g2 geometry) returns a Geometry that is the set union of g1 and g2 This work is documented as WorkLog task #1326 "Precise spatial operations", which is a subtask of WL#2377 "Add all missing GIS features to MySQL" - feel free to review and comment on these specifications at http://forge.mysql.com/worklog/ and make sure to test the new functionality! The source tree (based on the MySQL 5.1 code base) is now available from our public BitKeeper trees at http://mysql.bkbits.net:8080/mysql-5.1-wl1326/ - please consult the reference manual for more information on how to build a MySQL binary from a source tree: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/installing-source-tree.html To discuss the new GIS functionality, please use our GIS Forum at http://forums.mysql.com/list.php?23 and make sure to report bugs at our public Bug Database at http://bugs.mysql.com/ - thanks! This release is solely for stability purposes and adds no new features. The default Graphical User Interface has been further stabilised, and the LIDAR processing tools and Linear Reference System support significantly improved. GRASS 6.2.2 also includes a number of new message translations, and updates for the help pages. The Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS) is a Geographic Information System (GIS) used for spatial modeling, visualization of both raster and vector data, geospatial data management and analysis, processing of satellite and aerial imagery, and production of sophisticated presentation graphics and hardcopy maps. GRASS combines powerful raster, vector, and geospatial processing engines into a single integrated software package. The GRASS GIS project is developed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (the GPL) by volunteers the world over. GRASS differs from many other GIS software packages used in the professional world in that it is developed and distributed by users for users, mostly on a volunteer basis, in the open, and is given away for free. Emphasis is placed on interoperability and unlimited access to data as well as on software flexibility and evolution rate. The source code is freely available allowing for immediate customization, examination of the underlying algorithms, addition of new features, and fast bug fixing. GRASS is currently used around the world in academic and commercial settings as well as by many governmental agencies and environmental consulting companies. Some readers may remember my thoughs on OWS accounting software from early May on this list. The concept and specification had some evolution since then. Current versions of the documents are in german only. However any software development and communication will be in english and a achitecture diagram is attached. The project has yet not even a name nor a website (to be determined this week). I announced the start nonetheless to early consider opinions and interests of other people here who might be in need of such a solution. Please let me know. Necessary to mention this will be Free Software under GNU GPL? ;-) All the best Jan -- Dr. Jan-Oliver Wagner Intevation GmbH, Osnabr?ck Amtsgericht Osnabr?ck, HR B 18998 http://www.intevation.de/ Gesch?ftsf?hrer: Frank Koormann, Bernhard Reiter, Dr. Jan-Oliver Wagner -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Please let me know. I don't need it, but perplexingingly i find myself wanting it to exist. A friend has a pluggable billing system based on Django, developed for telecoms billing initially, which he is looking at packaging up for the django.contrib tree. We keep thinking about the accounting layer needed on top, but just now it seems like so much yakshaving... ... but now you're telling me there's an SDI application for this? > Necessary to mention this will be Free Software under GNU GPL? ;-) Yes, just for the sake of reassurance. Accounting! It is the new routing! jo --
