This feature release, version 6.1.0, improves upon the previous stable version of GRASS by adding hundreds of new features as well as support for the latest GIS data formats. The Geographic Resources Analysis Support System, commonly referred to as GRASS, is a Geographic Information System (GIS) combining powerful raster, vector, and geospatial processing engines into a single integrated software suite. GRASS includes tools for spatial modeling, visualization of raster and vector data, management and analysis of geospatial data, and the processing of satellite and aerial imagery. It also provides the capability to produce sophisticated presentation graphics and hardcopy maps. GRASS is currently used around the world in academic and commercial settings as well as by many governmental agencies and environmental consulting companies. It runs on a variety of popular hardware platforms and is Free open source software released under the terms of the GNU General Public License. Joining GRASS's well-developed raster engine the GRASS 6 series introduced a new topological 2D/3D vector engine featuring support for vector network analysis and SQL-based DBMS management of linked attributes. This release improves the integration and functionality of the raster and vector engines, and 3D raster (voxel) support has been greatly enhanced. A new graphical GIS manager and menu system has been implemented, while the old GUI display manager has been retained and improved for legacy support. The NVIZ visualization tool has been enhanced to display 3D vector data and voxel volumes and supports the creation of on-the-fly MPEG animations. Additional improvements include substantial message translation (i18n) with support for FreeType fonts, including multi-byte Asian characters, and tools to allow new project locations to be automatically generated from input data or EPSG code. This is the first release of GRASS as a proposed founding project of the new Open Source Geospatial Foundation. In support of the movement towards consolidation in the open source geospatial software world, GRASS is tightly integrated with the latest GDAL/OGR libraries. This enables access to an extensive range of raster and vector formats, including OGC-conformal Simple Features. GRASS also makes use of the highly regarded PROJ.4 software library with support for most known map projections and the easy definition of new and rare map projections via custom parameterization. It's goal is to bring functionality of GIS GRASS (and other tools) to the internet or just to the local networks. PyWPS is trying to implement OGC's WPS 0.4.0 (draft) standard 05-007r4. User can write his/her simple or complex scripts in Python programming language, using modules of GIS GRASS or other CLI-oriented tools, pywps downloads the data from remote servers, perform desired calculations and serve the data back to the client. User can work on temporary Locations, which will be deleted after the calculation is done or (s)he can work with existing Locations (using temporary mapset). There is existing demo implementation of PyWPS on the URL http://www.bnhelp.cz/mapserv/wpsdemo/index.php With sample processes, demonstrating usage of GRASS modules v.net.path i.maxlik r.los r.flow (see section under the map) NOTE: The Web client is not part of PyWPS. PyWPS together with GIS GRASS is used "behind" this interface to perform all needed calculations. Currently development has arrived to version 0.1 RC 1, which implements the WPS definition to 90-95%. Licence of PyWPS is GNU/GPL. For more details visit the URL http://les-ejk.cz/?cat=pywps where you can also get latest copy of PyWPS. I would like to ask for some feedback from those of you, who are interested in this topic and could install the script and perform some testing. If you have developed some GIS application and you would like to serve it to internet, so other people could use it without need to install any desktop-GIS software, PyWPS is what you are searching for. Looking forward to your feedback Jachym P.S. The Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software (GFOSS) will be given to individuals who have demonstrated leadership in the GFOSS community. Recipients of the award will have contributed significantly through their activities to advance open source ideals in the geospatial realm. Sol Katz was an early pioneer of GFOSS and left behind a large body of work in the form of applications, format specifications, and utilities while at the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. This early GFOSS archive provided both source code and applications freely available to the community. Sol was also a frequent contributor to many geospatial list servers, providing much guidance to the geospatial community at large. Sol unfortunately passed away in 1999 from Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, but his legacy lives on in the open source world. Those interested in making a donation to the American Cancer Society, as per Sol's family's request, can do so at https://www.cancer.org/asp/donate/don_multi_donate.asp?navToScreen=don_1. Nominations for the Sol Katz Award should be sent to SolKatzAward at conference.osgeo.org with a description of the reasons for this nomination. Nominations will be accepted until midnight UTC on August 31st (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?month=9&day=01&year=2006&hour=0&min=0&sec=0). A recipient will be decided from the nomination list by a selection committee designated by the OSGeo board. The winner of the Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software will be announced on September 15th at the FOSS4G 2006 conference (http://www.foss4g2006.org/) in Lausanne Switzerland. The hope is that the award will both acknowledge the work of community members, and pay tribute to one of its founders, for years to come. The Parliament broadly supported more open public access; restored a clause previously removed by the Council guaranteeing public right to view (though not to download) state geodata holdings free of cost. Soon a process of 'conciliation' will begin whereby the Council works out a wording it is happy to send back to the Parliament and thinks it will get past. This is a shadowy process at best. It would be helpful to know the stance of each Minister and local environment / advisory departments on INSPIRE and public access. http://publicgeodata.org/Contact_Your_Minister - if you are in Europe please consider doing this: contact the Minister for your country, ask them whether they support the Parliament's Amendments 21 and 27 and if not, can they explain why not? There are contact details for many but not all Ministers - please fill in any you find absent and search for. Benjamin Henrion and I as "Public Geodata" are sending yet another Open Letter this time to the Ministers in the Council; draft: http://publicgeodata.org/Open_Letter_Third_Reading This is at a "campaign testing" stage and it would be good to get more peoples' feedback, e.g. yours, about the letter process, wiki and so on. INSPIRE could be a good directive establishing a technical framework and bypassing a policy discussion while guaranteeing some basic public rights. The legislation process has become about intellectual property shadowboxing. I accidentally hit send... Anyway, I am looking for a data viewer, and have yet to find one with the features I need. There are four main features I'd like, in addition to what is "standard" (use shapefiles as a data source, zooming, getting information about features, etc). 1) Joining/relating tables and hyperlinking. I'd like to be able to open hyperlinked files for a given feature, but I don't want to store this information in the shapefile dbf. I want to be able to join the tables with a one-to-many relationship (ie a single feature has many links) and open files/URLS from a field in the joined table. 2) Selecting and exporting features. I want to be able to select certain features and export the selected table data to a new file. This could be a .dbf, .csv or .xls. 3) Editing. I DO NOT want the user to be able to edit the data in any way. I don't want them to be able to change anything in the shapefile features or table. I don't want the user to be able to add or delete anything. 4) It needs to be simple and easy to install. Those are the three key things I am looking for. Although I do a little programming, I am not great at it and therefor would like something that involves a minimal amount of programming, if any at all. I am looking for something that is free, but I am open to other suggestions. So, if anybody knows of anything available, I'd love to hear it! Thanks for your help. If a desktop application is a must, then I suggest you start from QGIS, MapWindow, uDig or something of that sort with a nice look and professional approach to installation and select one. The requirements that you have for the features could be satisfied with a plug-in with a few dialog boxes. The plug-ins require some programming and every platform has its own set of techniques for developing them. Ari Cayla Buell kirjoitti: > All- > > Sorry about my previous unfinished post. Under this test, even the most obvious incremental advances and add-ons can be patented unless the Patent Office or a defendant in court produces a document that shows someone else suggested it prior to the patent being filed. "The Federal Circuit's suggestion test forces litigants to search through reams of technical papers for a document in which someone, somewhere, bothers to state the obvious," said EFF Staff Attorney Corynne McSherry, who co-authored the amicus brief. "This is inefficient and burdensome, and contrary to the principles, policies, and standards the Supreme Court has upheld." In its amicus brief filed Tuesday, EFF shows how this "suggestion test" has led to a massive surge in bogus patenting, especially in software. These bad patents then become weapons against legitimate innovators -- especially those working on Free and Open Source Software projects. "Free and Open Source Software projects have become an integral part of the software industry and our nation's economy," said EFF Staff Attorney Jason Schultz, a co-author of the brief. "They often lack the resources or formal documentation to fight against bogus patents under the suggestion test, so it is principally important that the Supreme Court set the appropriate standard to prevent the approval of bogus patents." The case, KSR International Co. v. Teleflex, Inc., and Technology Holding Co., is scheduled for oral argument in front the Supreme Court this fall. Message-ID: <00a001c6c912$234a6430$da19fea9@TOSHIBAM35> Our marine data training program (www.oceanteacher.org) tries to avoid necessary use of commercial software, and so far we've been able to stay nearly ESRI-free. But the one Arc tool that we still find necessary is the clip function that cuts a shapefile down to the borders defined by a second shapefile. In our case, the second shapefile is almost always a simple rectangular box (area of interest). Does anybody know a free, stand-alone program (hopefully a binary executable) that can do this also? As I recall, it worked for what I needed at the time, but it's still pretty buggy. I have only one version in CVS and another version that looks hacked up. I attached the CVS version. Be warned that I haven't looked at this in quite some time and recall that it needs some work. Maybe it will be a useful place for you to start. Bryan Bryan Keith GIS Specialist Geomega, Inc. Message-ID: <20060831114339.GW19884@vishnu.tridity.org> dear freegis list, The Public Geodata initiative is writing to 25 European Environment Ministers asking for their position on a couple of critical points in the proposed INSPIRE Directive establishing a spatial data infrastructure in Europe. It's due to come up in the Council, at which they vote, in about a month's time. We have had really good response to our call for translators but there are a lot of countries we haven't covered local language for yet: Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Slovenia, Slovakia, Malta, Austria (is writing in German good enough?), Portugal, Greece and Cyprus (is writing in Greek appropriate?) http://publicgeodata.org/Open_Letter_Third_Reading - the text is about 2/3 of an A4 page and would be about 10-15 minutes work. If there is any way in which you could help or find a friend to help that would be great; it's important to find out Ministers' positions before the vote; we can write in English, but I bet we'll get a better response if we write in local language. If you can help please email me and / or make a wiki page before you start. cheers, jo From JGNT at chevron.com Thu Aug 31 16:22:46 2006 From: JGNT at chevron.com (Oguntimehin, John O. Message-ID: <345F9741B15CB44C9DE189918608E3412CB638@lagnrntx2.lagnr.chevrontexaco.net> Hi All, I need to get my hand on web mapping, I am completely new to this, though I have being working with GIS for over two years. I need to serve all my maps across users through the internet/intranet. Any idea on how I might start this, I am on my toes starting. Please point me to reference materials that might be helpful or just tell me what I need to do or if there is anywhere I can get online training. Thanks John
