Download from the usual place: http://thuban.intevation.org/download.html The changes since Thuban 0.9 include: - Faster rendering - Extensions to import APR files, to convert GNS files to shapefiles or to use Thuban as a WMS client, among others. Most of these extensions are somewhat experimental though. - Thuban files written with the Windows version should be readable on Unix systems now in most cases - Support for EPSG projections - A command line switch to enable attribute editing. This is a bit dangerous so it's off by default. Note that this list is about Free Software only. "open source" is another word for Free Software, which I do not recommend. "freeware" is even more ambigious and means gratis proprietary software in many cases. > Does anybody know that? There are several Free Software tools which are quite good at reading and displaying shapefiles. GRASS can certainly be used to edit vector information, but you would need to import and export shapefiles for this purpose. Apard from this I am not aware of a Free Software application that can simply manipulate shapefile geometries in place. Shapefile viewers using the Frank Warmerdam's shapelib certainly are relatively easy to extend to modify the geometries. We hope to add this to Thuban at some day, but it is not there yet. > It takes much time to have steps, generate ASCII -> shapefile -> > display, edit generate ASCII file -> shapefile -> display. Certainly. GRASS might help you with this process though. If you really have to do it very often, I suggest to consider improving Thuban for this purpose. -- Professional Service around Free Software (intevation.net) If freegis is useful for you, consider paying for the service: http://freegis.org/about-paying.en.html -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Don't you think? as for software, I think that you do not gain any freedom when using gratis proprietary software. Proprietary software (gratis or not) makes a user depend on the authors/company that developed the software. A long list of disadvantages derives from this concept and you will find valid ones for virtually any individual situation. I think you can distinguish coarsly into three areas: the societal problem of making people and even nations dependent on software products where they do not know what acutally is in there and which drives large portions of their whole live. The science problem of sharing information. How can you distribute scientific findings being or based on proprietary software? The findings are not 100% comprehesible any more and thus fail to qualify as science. Last but no least the economic problems. Proprietary software involves many risks for a business, starting with the loss of control over IT decisions (time of migration, product combination, product cancellation etc. etc.) upto various backdoors. Hope this gives you an idea why we distinguish gratis and free (as in freedom).
