Your Webserver does not react from my point of view right now. Our questions of course are: Are there limitations on the use of the output of your mapservice? What software are you using to serve the maps? The mapserver software? How did you get the DCW data then? We would like to offer free DCW data, but do not have a good converter for the VPF format it is in. Can anybody help or suggest something ? We only deal with Free Software (which always includes access to the source by definition. Because you need to have the freedom to change, redistribute and use the software.) There is a bunch of software which can render vector data. It really depends on your needs. GRASS for instance can do the job. You only have to get your data in. There is no direct import command for GRASS AFAIR, but the http://pages.infinit.net/danmo/e00/index-mitab.html can read the format and translate it to MIF for instance. Maybe you can use this library somehow. We have to sure of the license terms. Is it free software now? There is no notice (except in the documenation, which might have been for another products: saying that it is not public domain at time of writing.) If is was produces by the US government, it might be public domain. So did they state that the source code you can distribute is in the public domain? Bart, the server works fine. It is useful that you make the resulting png images free and point this out. However, after some thought I decided to not list your mapserver on the freegis.org list. Though the images can be used without restrictions the tool to create the images is proprietory. So we cannot promote the tool on this list, which deals with free GIS software. One can make isosurfaces, contour line slices, colored slices, volume renderings, etc of data in a 3-D grid, then rotate and animate the images in real time. There's also a feature for wind trajectory tracing, a way to make text anotations for publications, support for interactive data analysis, etc. Version: 5.2 License: GPL GPStrans GPStrans allows to exchange "routes" between Mayko mXmap and the Garmin GPS receiver. Version: 0.36 License: GPL New revision: GRASS 5.0 beta 8 OSSIM 0.2.a NCAR Graphics 4.2.1 License change: NCAR Graphics is now GPL. I think a separate email will be send to this list to tell the happy end of the licensing story about NCAR Graphics. Though some confusion was generated there I regard it still a story of success and hope more will follow. Once software is freed, it cannot be locked-up again unless no one has got a copy. I don't personally have time to do this, and wondered if the web site folks, as they add an item could also cache a source copy. I figure you must be collecting the software for distribution on your cd's so do you also must automatically keep a copy, no? Anyhow, thanks for all the work. I hope soon to take on a more active role in this area. We felt that the LGPL (which NCAR Graphics Version 4.2 was under) was a bit too restrictive for our users, so after much discussion, we decided to go with the GPL. This new version contains some new climate divisions in our map database, as well as minor bug fixes. I would like to add that GRASS offers a 3D raster interface to import/export VIS5D files. Like that you can easily visualize your GRASS volume data. Usually we make one anyway to check the software and the source code. In the case of ncar I just did not happen to make a copy. Right now we do not have plans to create a full blown cache. This should be done at sites with a bigger network connection. But we could always utilise one of the bigger net archives. Anyway the freegis pages have grown fast and we need to redesign them, so they stay usable. We also hope to make it even more easier for you all to participate in the freegis project.
